Terms of Use
Version 1.1 · Last revised · You must be 18 or over to use this site
1. Who we are and what this covers
This site and the ANSI8 course are operated by Starboard Labs LLC, a Florida limited liability company, which operates SafetyAid (“we”, “us”, “our”).
By using this site or buying the course you agree to these terms. If you do not agree to them, do not use the site. You must be at least 18 years old.
We sell in the United States only. If you are outside the United States, the course is not offered to you and we may decline or refund your purchase.
2. Your account
Buying the course requires an account. Give us accurate information and keep it current — the name on your account is the name that appears on your certificate.
You are responsible for your own login and for what happens under your account. Tell us promptly if you think somebody else has access to it. Do not share your account: the certificate records that a named person completed the training, and it is worth nothing if somebody else did it.
3. The course, the assessment and the certificate
What you are buying
One seat on the ANSI8 course for one person: the lessons, the practice exercises, the module quizzes and the final assessment. Buying it does not entitle you to teach it, redistribute it, or use it to train anyone else.
The final assessment
You need 70% to pass. Your purchase includes 2 attempts. If you do not pass on the first, there is a waiting period before the next one — currently 6, then 12, then 24 hours — so that a second attempt is a second attempt rather than a second guess.
If you use both attempts without passing, you can buy two further attempts. That purchase adds attempts to the course you already own; it does not restart the course, and your progress and earlier results stay exactly where they are.
What the certificate is, and what it is not
ANSI8 is an independent training program from SafetyAid, built on the ANSI Z133-2026 standard. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the American National Standards Institute. The certificate is a record of completed training — not a license, and not a replacement for hands-on competency assessment by your employer.
No government body, licensing authority or standards organization accredits this course. It records that you completed the training and passed the assessment, and nothing beyond that. Whether your employer or anyone else accepts it is their decision, not ours, and we do not promise that they will.
Validity and renewal
A certificate is valid for 24 months from the date you passed. After that it shows as lapsed when anyone checks it. Renewal is a fresh purchase and a fresh run through the course — it is not a subscription, nothing renews automatically, and we never charge you again without you buying again.
Checking a certificate
Every certificate carries a code. Anyone holding that code can look it up and see the holder’s name, the course, and the issue and expiry dates — and nothing else. You control who can check yours by choosing who you give the code to, and anyone you give it to can pass it on. There is no public directory and no way to search for a person.
Revocation
We can revoke a certificate if it was issued in error, or if we determine the assessment was not completed honestly by the person named on it. A revoked certificate stops verifying and says so. We will tell you if we revoke yours, and you can ask us to look at it again.
4. Payment and refunds
The price is the one shown at checkout, and it is a one-time charge. Payment is handled by Stripe; we never see or store your card number.
Refunds are case by case
This is a learning program, not a subscription or an app, and we tell you before you buy exactly what is in it. So we do not refund the course because somebody did not like the material, disagreed with it, or changed their mind about the trade.
We do look at refunds individually. Things we would expect to refund include:
- An accidental purchase — most commonly buying a second time under a different email address when you already had an account.
- A charge without access — you paid and something on our side failed to give you the course.
- A duplicate charge for the same seat.
Things we would not normally refund: not liking the content, failing the assessment, letting a certificate lapse, or an employer declining to accept it.
Neither list is exhaustive, and neither is meant to be read as one. Ask us at privacy@safetyaid.org — if your situation is a fair one we would rather hear it than have you assume the answer is no.
5. Using the site
We grant you a limited, personal, non-transferable right to use this site and the course you bought. Everything on it — the lessons, the videos, the questions, the design — belongs to us or our licensors, and the purchase does not transfer any of it to you.
The one exception is the tree work safety record at /data. Its text and charts are licensed to everyone under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). You may copy, adapt and republish them for any purpose, including commercially, as long as you credit SafetyAid, link to the license and say if you changed anything. The figures behind them are US federal data. The license does not cover the ANSI8 name or mark, or anything else on this site.
You may not:
- copy, record, republish, resell or redistribute any part of the course;
- share your account or your course access with anyone else;
- use the course or its content to build a competing training product;
- scrape, reverse-engineer or interfere with the site, or try to reach parts of it you have not paid for;
- remove or obscure any notice of ownership on anything you are permitted to download.
We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the site. If we discontinue a course you have paid for and not completed, contact us about a refund.
If you send us feedback or suggestions, we may use them freely and without owing you anything for them. Please do not send us anything you consider confidential.
6. Privacy
Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect and why, and it is part of these terms. Our Cookie Notice lists everything stored in your browser, and the subprocessors page names every company that handles data on our behalf. If these terms and the Privacy Policy disagree about personal information, the Privacy Policy wins.
7. Honest completion
The certificate is only worth something if the person named on it did the work. Do not have somebody else take the course or the assessment for you, and do not help anyone else do that.
We record progress and assessment results, and we may use them to look into whether a certificate was earned honestly. Section 3 covers what happens if we conclude it was not.
8. Disclaimers
This course is safety training, not a substitute for judgment on a job site. Tree work is dangerous. Nothing here replaces your employer’s procedures, a competent person’s on-site assessment, the manufacturer’s instructions for your equipment, or the standards themselves. Follow the standard and your employer, not your memory of a lesson.
The site and the course are provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure, or that the course will produce any particular result for you.
Some states do not allow certain warranties to be excluded, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent the law allows, we are not liable for lost profits, lost data, or any indirect, consequential, incidental, special, exemplary or punitive damages arising from these terms or your use of, or inability to use, the site or the course.
Our total liability for any claim under these terms is capped at the greater of $50 and the amount you actually paid us in the six months before the event giving rise to the claim. Having more than one claim does not raise that cap.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by our negligence.
10. Indemnification
You agree to defend and indemnify us and our officers, employees and agents against claims, and reasonable costs and legal fees, arising from your use of the site, your breach of these terms, or your breach of any law. We will tell you promptly about any such claim we learn of, and we may take over its defense at your expense. Do not settle any such claim without asking us first.
11. Suspension and termination
You can stop using the site at any time, and you can ask us to delete your account and the data behind it — see the Privacy Policy for how.
We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms, most obviously by sharing course access or having somebody else complete the assessment for you. If we close your account for a reason that is not your fault, we will refund what you have not used.
Sections 3 (what the certificate is), 5 (ownership), and 8 through 13 survive the end of these terms.
12. State-specific notices
These apply only if the law of the state named applies to you.
California
Under California Civil Code Section 1789.3, California users are entitled to this notice: the provider of this site is Starboard Labs LLC, Florida, USA. To complain about the site or ask for more information, email privacy@safetyaid.org. You may also contact the Complaint Assistance Unit of the Division of Consumer Services of the California Department of Consumer Affairs at 1625 N. Market Blvd., Suite N112, Sacramento, CA 95834, or by phone at (800) 952-5210.
California residents also have rights under the CCPA, as amended, including to know, delete and correct personal information. Our Privacy Policy explains how to use them.
Other states with privacy laws
If you live in a state with a comprehensive consumer privacy law — Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon, Montana, Utah, Iowa, Indiana, Tennessee and others — you may have rights of access, correction, deletion and portability, and rights to opt out of targeted advertising, sale of personal data and profiling. We do not do any of those three things. The state privacy rights section of our Privacy Policy sets this out and tells you how to make a request.
Nevada
Nevada residents may direct us not to sell covered information. We do not sell it, but if you want that on record, email privacy@safetyaid.org.
13. General
Governing law and where disputes go
These terms are governed by the law of the State of Florida, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute arising out of them or out of the site goes to the state or federal courts in Florida, and you and we both consent to that. Either of us may still bring an individual claim in small claims court, and either of us may ask any competent court for an injunction to protect intellectual property.
There is no arbitration clause in these terms, and no class-action or jury waiver. If you have a dispute with us, your ordinary legal rights are intact.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If the change is material we will say so on the site and, where we have your address, by email. Continuing to use the site after that means you accept the updated version. The version number and revision date at the top tell you which one you are reading.
Everything else
You agree to receive notices from us electronically. If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, it is narrowed only as far as needed and the rest stands. Our not enforcing something is not a waiver of it. “Including” means “including without limitation”. You may not assign these terms without our written consent; we may assign them. These terms, with the Privacy Policy and Cookie Notice, are the whole agreement between us about the site and the course.
We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. If any part of this site is hard for you to use, tell us at privacy@safetyaid.org and we will try to put it right.
You may not export anything from this site in breach of United States export control law.
