Questions
The things people ask before they start.
Answered from what the course actually does, not from what a brochure would like it to do. Where the honest answer is “we cannot promise that,” it says so.
Before you start
- Will my employer accept this?#
That is their call, and we would rather say so than guess for them. Employers set their own training requirements, and some have requirements we have never seen.
What we can tell you is exactly what the certificate records: that you completed the full course of instruction and passed the final assessment for a course built on ANSI Z133-2026. If your employer has asked for something specific, show them that sentence before you buy rather than after.
- Do I need to be an arborist already?#
No. The course assumes you have not read the standard, and it does not assume you have climbed. It is written for everybody on the crew — the climber, the ground crew, and somebody on their first week who has never touched a chainsaw. The standard applies to all of them equally, which is the whole reason to teach it to all of them at once.
- I am already board certified. Is there anything here for me?#
Probably not much you have not met before, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Board certification teaches this material thoroughly to people building a career on it. Where this is useful to you is getting the rest of your crew onto the same page as you, working from the same copy of the same rules.
- How long does it actually take?#
About eight hours of material. Almost nobody does that in one sitting and it is not built expecting you to — see below.
- Can I stop and come back?#
Yes, and it is built for that specifically. Your place is saved as you go, down to which part of a lesson you were in, so coming back mid-lesson puts you where you left rather than at the top of the module. You can leave it a month and pick it up.
- Can I do it on a phone?#
Yes. The course, the lessons and the assessment all work on a phone, and the contents open as a sheet rather than needing a sidebar. A bigger screen is more comfortable for eight hours of reading, but nothing requires one.
The final assessment
- What is the pass mark?#
70%, worked out from the number of questions rather than from a fixed number of right answers.
- How many questions are on it?#
90, with at least one from every lesson. Allow about 90 minutes, a minute a question. Nothing times you.
The pass mark is a percentage, 70% of the questions, so it stays the same bar if the exam ever changes length.
- What happens if I fail?#
You get 2 attempts with the course. Failing the first one costs you nothing except the wait below, and your course progress is untouched — you do not retake the lessons, only the exam.
- Is there a wait between attempts?#
Yes. 6 hours after your first attempt, 12 after the second, and 24 after that. It is there so the second attempt is not the first one repeated from short-term memory, which does nobody any good on a job where the material matters.
- Do I find out which questions I got wrong?#
No, and this one is deliberate rather than an oversight. You are told your score and whether you passed, not which questions went wrong.
The reason is that the same questions come back on a retake. Marking them individually would turn a second attempt into an exercise in remembering which four to change, and the certificate would stop meaning what it says. The quiz at the end of each module works the same way until you pass it: a fail shows your score, and a pass shows every answer. Passing a module’s quiz is what opens the next module.
- What if I use up both attempts?#
You can buy 2 more against the course you already own. It is not a second enrollment: your progress, your lessons and your place all stay exactly as they are, and it costs less than the course did.
The certificate
- What does the certificate actually say?#
That you completed the full course of instruction and passed the final assessment. It carries your name, the date, an expiry date and a code an employer can check. That sentence is the whole claim, and it is the same sentence on the PDF, on this site and on the verification page.
- Is this a Z133 certification? Am I certified afterwards?#
No. It is a certificate of completion — a record that you did the training and passed the assessment. It is not a license, not a credential, and not accredited by anybody.
It is also not a substitute for your employer checking that you can actually do the work. Hands-on competency is assessed on the ground by people watching you work, and no online course replaces that.
The disclosures page covers this in full, along with our use of the ANSI name, the accreditation we do not hold, and the absence of any regulatory approval.
- How long is it valid?#
24 months from the day you pass. The expiry date is printed on it, and the verification page shows the same date to anyone checking.
- How does an employer check it?#
There is a code on the certificate and a QR code beside it. Either one lands on a page that says whether the certificate is valid, expired or withdrawn, and who it belongs to. They do not need an account and there is nothing to sign up for.
- What happens when it expires?#
It stops verifying as valid and says it has expired rather than disappearing. We email you about 90 days before that happens, so it is not a surprise.
To re-certify you retake the course. Renewal is a full retake rather than a refresher quiz, because the standard itself gets revised and a two-year-old pass on a superseded edition is not the same thing as knowing the current one. It costs less than the first time.
Money
- What does it cost, and is it a subscription?#
$49 once. It is not a subscription, there is no monthly charge, and there is nothing to cancel.
Payment is handled by Stripe and we never see your card number. The only other things you could ever pay us for are more exam attempts and, in two years, a renewal — both optional and both cheaper than the course.
- What does renewal cost?#
$29, against $49 the first time. It is a full re-purchase rather than a discount on a subscription, because there is no subscription — you are buying the course again, two years later, against whatever the standard says then.
- Can I get a refund?#
We look at refunds case by case rather than running a fixed window. An accidental purchase, a duplicate charge, or paying and not getting access are all things we would expect to refund.
What we would not normally refund is not liking the material, failing the assessment, or an employer declining to accept the certificate — we tell you what is in the course before you buy precisely so those are not surprises. The full wording is in the terms, and if your situation seems fair to you, contact@safetyaid.org — we would rather hear it than have you assume the answer is no.
- Can I buy this for my whole crew?#
Yes, but not as one transaction on this site — there is no cart that sells twelve seats. Crews are arranged directly with us instead, and priced below the individual rate. Each person still gets their own account and their own certificate, because the certificate names a person.
The employers page explains how that works and is where you tell us how many people you have.
- My question is not here.#
contact@safetyaid.org — a person reads it. If the answer turns out to be one other people need, it ends up on this page.
